Biography

Narges Farahani is an independent Iranian artist, curator, and researcher, born in 1991 in Tehran. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design and began exploring ceramics through specialized training programs after completing her university studies. Since 2015, she has been working experimentally with clay and ceramics, approaching the medium with a contemporary perspective.

In addition to ceramics, Narges occasionally incorporates other media such as painting, video art, and sound into her artistic practice. She has held one solo exhibition and participated in over twenty group exhibitions and biennials both nationally and internationally. She has also curated seven exhibitions focused on ceramics and founded Iran’s first electronic magazine dedicated to ceramic art, titled Contemporary Ceramic Art.

Between 2020 and 2021, she completed several courses in contemporary art and curating—such as Curatorial History and Theory and Proposal Writing for Curators—at the Empty Space School.

Since 2021, her research has centered on the concept of materiality and the narrative of material as a non-human entity, with a particular focus on clay and ceramics. Since 2022, she has specifically explored how soils from drying rivers in Iran carry cultural, ecological, and social stories. Her practice involves transforming these soils into clay and investigating their texture, history, and narrative potential.

Artist’s Statement

My artwork is a way to navigate the anxieties and stress I carry within, offering an escape from the constant flood of thoughts that often overwhelm me. These inner tensions sometimes make it difficult to communicate with others, and this silence manifests itself in different ways throughout my work.

I primarily work with ceramics, often integrating video, sound, and light to expand the narrative and sensory possibilities of my pieces. Shadow and texture are central elements in my practice, explored through manipulation of light and photographic techniques.

For me, ceramics are more than objects; they are vessels that hold stories embedded in their materials. By working with soils from drying rivers, I seek to uncover hidden narratives of ecological and social transformation. I listen to the material, allowing it to guide the making process, and in doing so, I emphasize the relationship between humans, non-humans, and the environment.

Through my work, I aim to create objects that convey the unseen stories of the world around us, connecting personal experience with broader cultural and ecological narratives.

Artist’s Statement

My artwork is a way to control the anxieties and stress that I have inside and it is a way to escape from the onslaught of thoughts that I suffer. This stress and worries cause me to not be able to talk to anyone and this lack of talking manifests itself in different ways in my work. My works are combined with ceramic and often with video, sound, and light. Shadow and texture are two important elements in my works, which I address by playing with light sources and the way I photograph.
